1778 – More than 700 Blacks participate in the Battle of Monmouth, (N.J.)
1868 – Fourteenth Amendment ratified granting citizenship to African Americans.
1967 – In Detroit, one of the worst riots in U.S. history begins on 12th Street in
the predominantly Black inner city. It will leave 43 killed, 342 injured and 1,400
buildings burned.
1968 – In Cleveland, a violent shootout between a Black Militant organization led
by Ahmed Evans and the Cleveland police occurs. During the shootout, a riot
begins and lasts for five days.
1969 – All star MVP: Willie McCovey (SF Giants)
1984 – Vanessa Williams becomes the first Miss America to resign
when she surrenders her crown after nude photos of her appeared
in Penthouse magazine.
1984 – Suzette Charles replaces Williams as 57th Miss America 1984 and the 2nd
African American to hold title.
