Denmark Vesey, 1822, Insurrection leader (b. 1767)

1822 – Thirty-five slaves are hanged in South Carolina, including
Denmark Vesey, after being accused of organizing a slave rebellion.
1839 – 25 miles off the coast of Cuba, 53 rebelling slaves led by Joseph
Cinque take over the slave ship, Amistad.
1872 – Elijah McCoy patents 1st self-lubricating locomotive engine. The
quality of his inventions helped coin the phrase, “The Real McCoy”.
1943 – Lt. Charles Hall becomes the 1st Black pilot to shoot down a
Nazi Plane.
1964 – Pres. Lyndon Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 meant
to prohibit segregation in public places.
1973 – The National Black Network begins operation on radio.
1986 – The Supreme Court upholds affirmative action in 2 rulings.
